Great Smoky Mountains Fly Fishing Report - 10/11/18
Michael did just about exactly what I predicted in yesterday's report. I have never seen
so much misguided information on the TV as I have seen since the storm warnings
started. For example, one national weather station stated the gulf was much warmer
than it normally is at this time of the year, and stated further it was 6 degrees above
normal. That is completely false. The water temperature of the Gulf was about the
exact same temperature as it always have been, or 85 to 86 degrees. I measured it for
years offshore past the shelf and it was with a degree or two of the same every year.
Most of the hard hit places haven't been shown yet.

To the Smokies. Today, is the day I advise people planning on making a fly fishing
trip to the Smokies as to the conditions they should expect.
Little River is completely
blown out flowing at over 1040 cfs and still rising
as of 10 AM this morning. All
the streams in the park are high and still rising. Conditions for fly fishing this weekend
may not be good at all. Currently, there are flood advisories out. Late Saturday to
Sunday, would be the first time the stream levels may be getting low enough to fish, but
that's a guess. The North Carolina side seems to be in the best shape right now.

By the way, a local fly shop keeps putting out completely misleading information about
the West Prong of Little Pigeon River, referring to a USGS station. It does not have a
USGS station within 20 river miles of the park, and where the one exist in Sevierville,
they refer to, also reads water from the Middle Prong and East Prongs of Little Pigeon
River, miles away as well as miles of water outside the park. It is completely worthless
information as for knowing water levels of the West Prong of Little Pigeon River. The
Middle Prong also does not have a USGS gauge.

Recommended Fishing Strategy:
Keep in mind, the strategies I am recommending is for the maximum odds of catching
numbers of fish. Many prefer or favor a dry fly and by all means there isn't anything
wrong with that. It's just a fact that if nothing is hatching at the time, it reduces your
odds of success. You can still probably hook some trout, just not as many as if you fish
subsurface. Of course, this is also based on using good techniques and the right flies.
Some guys don't know how to fish below the surface.

Strategy:
Not all of the insects you see above will be hatching in the same location. It is usually
only one or two. It varies with the elevation. Some are just starting in the low elevations
and some about finished in the higher elevations. If you fished the day or two before
and know where something is hatching, fish the nymph or larva stage of it. If you
haven't fished the day or two before, until I spotted something hatching, I would fish the
BWO nymph. If you spot something hatching (coming off the water), change to the
appropriate emerger, dun or adult imitations of the insect.

Tips for Beginners:
Don't let anyone intimidate you by contending that fly fishing is more difficult to learn
and master than other types of fishing. It isn't.
