Weather and Stream Conditions - Coming Week
At the present time, early this Monday morning, the streams in the park are rising some but
they are still in good shape. Little River is flowing at 379 cfs, which is a little high, but if the
weather forecast is correct, you can expect it to fall back down fast. The Oconaluftee River
has already leveled out at 1260 and should begin to fall.
I have checked the three main weather sites and although there is still rain in the forecast during
the next week, they all show that only a small amount is expected. I hope they are
right because we are well above normal for the total accumulation this year.
The low only went down to 48 degrees last night. There's a 30% chance of rain this morning with
a high of 60 degrees. The water temperature should be in good shape today but it's going to be
very windy. The low tonight will be more normal and colder, going down to near freezing.
Tuesday, a slight chance of rain returns. The high should be around 55 but the wind will be back
down to almost calm. There's a 70% chance of rain for Tuesday night and Wednesday. The odds
drop back down to 30 percent for Wednesday night. The weather sites are only showing a total of
about a quarter of an inch of rain for Tuesday and Wednesday. I question that but again, I hope
they are right.
Thursday will be clear with a high near 50. The low that night will be down to 28. Friday's high will be a little
cooler, reaching only 45. There is a slight chance of rain and snow showers Friday night.
Saturday also has a slight chance (20%) of rain and snow. The high will only be 38. I know some of our
customers are not going to like the forecast because they are planning on camping and fishing this
weekend. The low Saturday night is predicted to be around 19 degrees in Gatlinburg. The high will be back
up to around 40 for Sunday.
I completed the four part trailer for our 4 hour long, 2 Disc "Fly Fishing Great Smoky Mountains" DVD. It has
some "cold water" fishing scenes and they may well be appropriate for the coming weekend.
