Fly Fishing DVD - Part 8
In part 7 of this series, I went over the reason we changed our minds and released "Fly Fishing For Trout In
Tailwaters" as the first of our (20) twenty instructional DVD on fly fishing. We originally intended to release
the "Top 85 Tips On Fly Fishing For Trout" as the first one put on the market for sale. The reason for the
"top tips" title was due to my experience with many other programs on fishing and boating that I had produced
for Bennett Media Group, Venice, California, World's largest distributor of boating and fishing videos. With
few exceptions, my videos of similar titles have always been among the top selling programs.

I have "Top 60 Tips on Navigation", 'Top 60 Tips on Boat Handling" and about ten other top 60 and top 100
tips titles on various other boating topics. My "Top 60 Tips on Fishing", after almost twenty years, is still a top
selling video. The "Top 60 Tips on Saltwater Fishing" and other similar titles for various types of fishing have
sold thousands of copies. All of the videos with the "Top something" titles have sold very good over the years.

We didn't exactly originate that concept. The same concept had been used by various publications as the
title of hundreds, if not thousands of books, magazines and everything else published on paper. It is just a
fact that people like media that's categorized into list. It worked so good for us at BMG, I changed "tips" to
"mistakes" and started producing boating and fishing videos like the "Top 60 Mistakes on Boating" and the
"Top 60 Mistakes on Saltwater Fishing". They too, have been very good selling programs.

Guess what? Our top selling fly fishing DVD has always been the "Top 85 Tips on Fly Fishing For Trout". I
would have to do some work to pull up the numbers of direct sells and wholesales data of our distributors but
it's a few thousand copies to date. I can only assume the reason is again, people like tips and they like them
in a list they can scan. You can do that on the DVD menus. Personally, I don't fit into that same category of
people, but I don't fit into most of the stereotyped categories of anything.

There is one thing about this video that's completely different from all other fly fishing videos.
I will assure
you it shows far more blue-ribbon trout streams than any other video on the market. You will see
over (50) fifty different trout streams in this one video.

By the way, I introduced and concluded the "Top 60 Tips on Fly Fishing for Trout" on the Blackfoot River in
Montana, the home of the "A River Runs Through It" movie.

By the way, don't ask why I put a large picture of Angie on the cover and a small picture of me (lower right
hand corner of the cover) even though my wild Madison River rainbow that was over 18 inches is a little
larger than here Bitterroot River cutthroat.. If you can't figure that out, you will never learn to catch trout on a

Another wild one over 18 inches from the White River in Colorado. It was one of three back to back to back catches of wild
rainbows about the same size. By the way, you won't hear much about Colorado's White River. It isn't near any big resorts or fly
shops, but it's one of the best trout streams in Colorado.
