Current Conditions in the Smokies
I came back from UT hospital yesterday morning through Townsend Tennessee and
took a few shots of Little River. These pictures were taken about 11:00 AM. From
the looks of the wet rocks on the bank the water appeared to be falling at the time
These are all thumbnails...Click on the picture to enlarge them.

When I arrived at Pigeon Forge, I took some shots of the Little Pigeon River.

Although the images make conditions look bad at the time, the water was already
falling. When I got to Pigeon Forge, I got a good view of the mountains. It was the
first time clouds didn't block my view. As soon as it did, I understood why the rainfall
amounts didn't raise the stream levels as much as they could have.
There was
snow covering the trees from about the 3500 or 4000 foot level up
. That
prevented the large amount of precipitation (shown by the National Weather Service
yesterday) from raising the water levels more than it could have. By that I mean
much of the precipitation was in the form of snow as opposed to rain..Of course, as
the snow melts, it will add to the levels but the delay the melting snow created may
have prevented some streams from flooding. I couldn't get a shot of the snow
because before I could get off the highway to take a picture, clouds covered the
mountains again.

The temperature went down to 33 degrees in Gatlinburg last night, so some snow
probably still remains. It will all be gone by the end of today for sure. The
temperatures should rise back up into the high sixties.

As bad as the water looks, the stream levels should be fine by this weekend. In fact,
the weather forecast is excellent and fishing conditions should be great.

I will not be posting an article for Thursday. I will be out in the Gulf of Mexico. I
will try to get one posted late Friday when I get back to where I can. Angie will be
filling the Perfect Fly orders by herself for a couple of days. She does a better job
when I'm not there to bother her. Thanks for all of your support.
