The following flies are the ones we recommend
to imitate the various species of caddisflies that
are important to anglers fly-fishing the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. As you can see
below, none of the caddisfly species are
extremely abundant.
Please keep in mind that we are not recommending any
of these companies over anyone else that sells the same
fly. We have no return favors, commission or other
consideration for listing them. Our only purpose is to
provide you, the viewer of this site, information that is
useful. Because there are so many takeoffs and patterns
with similar names we want to recommend specific flies
that you can obtain commercially. For those that tie their
own flies, we will also provide our on "Perfect Fly
Patterns" that will soon be shown in our Fly Tying DVDs.
Explanation of the Types of Caddisfly Imitations:
L1 - Larva Uncased-Free Living:
These flies imitate the free-living caddisfly larvae.
L2 - Larva Uncased-Net Spinning:
These flies imitate the net-spinning caddisfly
larvae.
L3 - Larva Cased:
These flies imitate the caddisfly larvae that are
cased.
B - Pupa Bottom:
These flies imitate the caddisfly pupae prior to
emerging.
E - Emerging Pupa:
These flies imitate the caddisfly pupae shedding
its shuck when it is emerging. It is exactly like the
bottom pupa but with no added weight.
D - Adult:
These flies imitate the full grown adult caddisfly,
depending on the species, prior to it departing
the water. It can also be used to imitate the
female depositing her eggs.
W - Wet Adult:
These flies imitate those caddisflies, depending
on the species, that dive to the bottom to deposit
their eggs and/or those that hatch beneath the
surface.
S - Spent Spinner:
These flies imitate those caddisflies that have
mated and died (males) and those female that
have deposited their eggs and died.
